LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team dropped an 11-6 decision to Western Water Polo Association rival and sixth-ranked Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon at Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center. It was the 10th consecutive loss to the Lions and fourth overall this season. UCSD was led by
Steven Donohoe and
Sean Roberts with two goals each. The Tritons fell behind 4-1 in the first half and cut the deficit down to 7-5 in the fourth quarter before the Lions closed the game on a 4-1 run. The loss drops the Tritons to 11-13 while the Lions improve to 14-6.
UCSD was shutout in the first quarter as LMU scored at the 4:53 and 3:37 marks to take a 2-0 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Sean Cruz netted a goal to pull UCSD within 2-1, but LMU scored two more times before the half to lead 4-1.
The Tritons would pull within two goals twice in the fourth quarter, the last time at 6-4 after a Steven Donohoe goal. LMU scored the final goal of the period to take a 7-4 lead into the fourth.
The Tritons' Roberts scored at 7:18 to pull UCSD within 7-5, but LMU scored two more goals and closed the game on a 4-1 run for the 11-6 final score.
David Morton made three saves in goal for UCSD.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday, November 7 when it hosts Santa Clara in a WWPA match-up. First sprint is set for 12:00 p.m. The Tritons will honor their senior class in a brief ceremony before the noon start.
