LONG BEACH, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team trailed early and put together a four-goal fourth quarter but it was not enough in a 7-6 loss to No. 8 Long Beach State on Friday night in Long Beach.
Bryce Madsen led the Tritons with three goals while
Steven Donohoe,
Sean Roberts and
Ryan Allred also scored. UCSD trailed 4-2 entering the final quarter and tied the game at 5-5 late in the fourth, only to see LBSU score consecutive goals to hand the Tritons the loss. The loss drops UCSD to 11-12 on the season while the 49ers improve to 8-8.
UCSD scored the first goal of the game only to have LBSU score two unanswered goals as the 49ers held a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Tritons did not score and LBSU added another score to lead 4-2.
The teams would exchange goals in the third quarter as the 49ers led 5-3 heading into the fourth.
The Tritons scored the first two goals in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5. LBSU scored the next two goals before the Tritons added one more score to close out the game at 7-6 49ers.
David Morton had eight saves in goal for the Tritons.
The loss was UCSD's second of the season to LBSU. UCSD lost to LBSU by an 11-7 score at the Northern California tournament.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday against Western Water Polo Association rival No. 6 Loyola Marymount. First sprint is set for 12:00 p.m. in Los Angeles.
