LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 3rd-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team swept Cal Poly Pomona 25-18, 25-11, 25-21 to win its 10th consecutive match on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons were led by
Katie Condon with 12 kills and
Sylvia Schmidt who added 11 kills. The Tritons outhit the Broncos .280 - .102.
Roxanne Brunsting served up 10 consecutive points in the second set as UCSD swept CPP for the second time this season. The win sets up a showdown for first-place in the conference on Saturday night when the Tritons host No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino. "It will be a high level match tomorrow," said head coach
Tom Black. "Winning the battle of serve and pass will be key."
With the win, UCSD improves to 19-1, 11-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Broncos drop to 8-11, 5-7 CCAA.
Condon's 12 kills came on a .385 attack percentage while Schmidt's 11 kills came on .280 hitting. For Condon, the .385 percentage was her second highest of the season. The sophomore outside hitter hit over .400 against Northern Michigan on September 4.
Julia Freidenberg added seven kills on .455 hitting and Hillary Williamson came off the bench to add four kills.
Brunsting had 11 digs and three of UCSD's five aces on the night. Karen Reis also reached double figures in digs with 10. It was Reis' fourth time to reach at least 10 digs, the last time was on September 18 against Cal State L.A. For Brunsting, it was the eighth time this season the libero has served up at least three aces in a single match.
It was the first time since the 2004 season that the Tritons swept Cal Poly Pomona twice during the conference season.
In the first set, the Tritons hit at a .351 clip and held CPP to .207 hitting. UCSD scored four of the first five points of the set. Leading 14-10, UCSD went on an 8-3 run to take its largest lead at 22-13. UCSD cruised to the 25-18 win as Schmidt closed it out with a kill.
It would be an understatement to say the Tritons dominated set two. UCSD opened up a 15-2 lead which included the 10-0 service run by Brunsting. After a Williamson and Audrey Green block, followed by a Williamson kill put the Tritons ahead 24-7, CPP would score a few points before the end of the set as the Tritons took it on Condon's kill at 25-11.
The third set was the closest of the night. UCSD took an early 9-2 lead and it appeared the sweep would come quickly. CPP would chip away and come back within 18-17 and 19-18 before UCSD scored four straight points, keyed by two Condon kills and a service ace. Leading 23-18, CPP cut it down to 23-21 before UCSD captured the match on two CPP errors at 25-21.
UCSD is back in action tomorrow night when it hosts No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino at 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
