LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team split two games at the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Irvine. The Tritons began the day with a loss to No. 5 Loyola Marymount by a 10-6 score. UCSD rebounded to defeat No. 13 Pacific 8-5 in the second match-up of the day.
Ryan Allred scored a combined six goals in the two games to pace the Tritons. UCSD is now 8-8 on the season and will play two more games on Sunday at the UCI Invite. The Tritons will face No. 9 UC Irvine at 11:10 a.m. at Corona Del Mar HS Pool.
In the loss to Loyola Marymount, the Tritons were within 5-2 at halftime. LMU began the third period by scoring three consecutive goals to take a commanding 8-2 lead. The Tritons outscored the Lions in the final period for the 10-6 score.
Allred led the Tritons with three goals while Lance Curtiss scored twice. Bryce Madsen also scored in the loss. David Morton had 10 saves in goal for UCSD.
LMU was led by Andrew Aki with three goals while Tibor Forai and Derek Milligan scored two goals each.
In the match-up with Pacific, UCSD led 2-1 after the first quarter and 6-3 at halftime. Pacific would close to within 6-5, but Steven Donohoe poured in goals at the 2:27 mark in the third and 5:11 mark in the fourth to give the Tritons an 8-5 edge. UCSD shutout Pacific in the fourth to wrap up the win.
Allred and Steven Donohoe scored three times each. Madsen and Sean Roberts also scored for the Tritons. Morton tallied seven saves in goal.
