LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team scored 11 of the first 12 goals of the game and cruised to a 16-3 win at Chapman on Friday evening at Allred Pool. The Tritons were paced by
Ryan Allred who poured in a career-high six goals, his first goals of the 2009 campaign. He was one of six different Tritons to score as Allred,
Bryce Madsen,
Sean Cruz and
Peter Gresham also added multi-goal games. With the win, the Tritons have won two straight heading into the UC Irvine Invitational, beginning Saturday. The Tritons improve to 7-7 on the season.
It was UCSD's second highest scoring total this season. UCSD defeated Cal Lutheran 17-5 at the Triton Invitational in September. In addition to Allred's six scores, Gresham and Madsen scored three times each. Cruz scored twice while Brian Donohoe and Kneif Lohse added scores.
Madsen scored UCSD's first two goals of the game and the Tritons took a 3-0 edge on Cruz's score with:15 remaining. After Chapman added a goal, Lohse poured in a goal with :01 left to give the Tritons a 4-1 edge through the first quarter.
The last goal of the first quarter began an 8-0 UCSD run which ran from the first quarter through the third quarter. UCSD outscored Chapman 4-0 in the second quarter and 3-0 in the third quarter.
The Tritons would add five more scores in the fourth quarter as Allred poured in three more goals in the final period.
UC San Diego also went up against the nation's leading scorer Alex Mule, holding the Chapman star to zero scores.
David Morton played in goal for the Tritons with reserve goalkeeper Daniel Ramirez seeing action in the fourth quarter.
UCSD looks for its first three game winning streak of the season when it takes on No. 5 Loyola Marymount on Saturday at the UC Irvine Invitational.
