Lawley's Last-Second Shot Lifts UCSD Past Sonoma State, 60-57

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. ? Jordan Lawley drained a 50-footer with one second remaining to break a tie game and lift the UC San Diego men's basketball team to a 60-57 victory over Sonoma State Friday night at Seawolf Gymnasium. Shane Poppen recorded his fourth double-double of the season, tallying 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way for the Tritons.

UCSD improves to 11-6 overall and 8-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with its fifth consecutive victory, matching the team's longest streak of the season. The Tritons also won five straight from December 5 to January 2.

Sonoma State falls to 7-12 overall and 3-9 in the CCAA.

UCSD led by as many as 15 points in the second half (45-30) following a Kelvin Kim layup at the 10:10 mark, but Sonoma would come roaring back. Kyle Shandera's putback ignited a 19-6 run for the Seawolves as the home team trimmed the deficit to just two, 51-49 with 5:20 remaining.

A.J. Maulhardt scored inside and Lawley hit one of two at the line to put UCSD back in front by five, but Keith Garner scored four straight points to bring Sonoma to within one 54-53. After Shane Poppen hit a pair of free throws giving the Tritons a three-point advantage, the Seawolves' Casey McRoberts knocked down a triple, got fouled on the shot, and converted the four-point play to give Sonoma State a 57-56 lead with 15 seconds remaining.

Kim was fouled on the ensuing possession but converted just one of two at the line, giving the Seawolves a chance to break the tie and win the game with 10 seconds left to play. This time McRoberts came up dry and the ball went back to the Tritons with seven seconds remaining.

Lawley, who was just 1-of-10 for the game to that point, drained a half court shot just as time expired, capping the dramatic victory for UCSD.

"Jordan hit a big, big shot," head coach Chris Carlson said. "Sonoma made a great run to get back into the game and it really could have went either way in the end. Fortunately, we came up with some big rebounds down the stretch, they had their opportunities, and Jordan hit a huge shot."

Lawley finished with just six points in the game, but he came through when it mattered most.

Poppen was 4-of-5 from the field and 7-of-10 at the free throw line, reaching double figures for the first time in three games. Kim hit 4-of-6 shots, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, for 14 points to go with three assists.

UCSD shot 45% for the game, hitting 17-of-38 shots, while Sonoma State finished at 37% clip.

McRoberts finished with 17 points to pace the Seawolves, while Garner chipped in with 10 off the bench.

The Tritons will take on Humboldt State with second place in the CCAA standings on the line Saturday at 7:30 p.m. UCSD defeated the Lumberjacks 80-67 on December 5.
