POMONA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team led by five points at halftime but dropped a 54-51 decision to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night at Kellogg Gym. The Tritons were led by Shane Poppen and Alan Husted with 14 points apiece. The Tritons were outrebounded 37-20, but had a second-half lead with 6:48 remaining after a Tyler Acevedo three-pointer. With the loss, UCSD drops to 6-6, 3-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Broncos improve to 7-4, 3-3 CCAA.
The Tritons led at halftime by a 26-21 score as Shane Poppen and Alan Husted had eight points apiece. UCSD connected on 9-of-9 first-half free-throws.
With the Tritons down two points, Tyler Acevedo hit a three-pointer to put UCSD ahead 42-41 with 6:48 remaining.
Cal Poly Pomona connected on a three-pointer at the 4:38 mark to go ahead 49-45. The Tritons would come within two points on two Kelvin Kim free throws at 49-47 with 4:12 remaining.
Trailing by four points, Husted nailed a big three-pointer to pull UCSD within 52-51 with 1:25 remaining.
Down by one, Brett Stuckey missed a three pointer and Jordan Lawley missed a jumper with :12 left.
CPP's Larry Gordon connected on two free-throws with :10 left to give the Broncos a 54-51 lead.
The Tritons had a chance to tie but the final three-point attempt missed and CPP had the win.
Poppen scored 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting, while Husted scored 14 points on 3-for-5 from three-point range. Kim dished out a team-high five assists.
UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to Cal State Monterey Bay on January 16. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Seaside.
