STOCKTON, Calif. ? The 9th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team defeated No. 14 Pacific 8-7 on Sunday afternoon at the NorCal Tournament in Stockton. There was no ninth-place game between UCSD and UC Santa Barbara. With the win over Pacific, the Tritons improved to 10-2 on the year, winning 2-of-3 at the NorCal tournament. Against the Tigers, Steven Donohoe led the way with three goals, while A.J. Kotanjian added two scores. David Morton recorded six saves in the win. UCSD is back in action on Thursday night when it hosts Loyola Marymount at 6:00 p.m. at Canyonview Pool.
Against the Tigers, UCSD shutout the Tigers 2-0 in the first quarter. Pacific outscored the Tritons in the next two quarters to pull even entering the fourth.
Tied up at 6-6 heading into a fourth quarter showdown, the defenses of both teams picked the pace and a battle ensued throughout the fourth quarter. As time was winding down, the Tigers trailed 8-6 to UCSD with less then 30 seconds remaining. The Tritons ran out the clock to end the game, and close out the Tigers 8-7.
