SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. ? The 18th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team made it a bay area sweep in defeating San Francisco State 25-17, 26-24, 25-17 on Saturday night at Main Gym on the SFSU campus. With the win, the Tritons improve to 9-2, 3-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Gators drop to 7-5, 1-3 CCAA. Rebecca Bailey led the way for the Tritons with 12 kills on .458 hitting, while Sylvia Schmidt added nine kills. The Tritons served up 10 aces on the night, four by Hillary Williamson. The wins by UCSD this weekend sets up a showdown with No. 1 ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Friday night in RIMAC Arena.
SF State hit just .133 on the evening, including a .059 clip in the opening set, compared to the Tritons' .275 percentage. The Gators were also victimized by 10 UCSD serving aces.
Despite such woes, SF State was in position to steal the second set, overcoming an early 12-6 deficit to forge a 23-20 lead. Any notion of a Gator comeback was soon dashed, however, after the Tritons went on a 6-1 run to close the frame. In the third set, UCSD was able to maintain a safe distance from SF State throughout, limiting the Gators to a .103 hitting percentage to help secure the victory.
Also for the Tritons, Roxanne Brunsting had 11 digs while Thalia McCann had 36 assists and six digs.
