No. 15 Tritons Defeat Sonoma State, Fall to Santa Clara at the Loyola Marymount Tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The 15th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team split two games at the Loyola Marymount tournament on Saturday afternoon on the LMU campus.  UCSD began the day by outscoring Sonoma State 6-0 in the first-period and cruised to the 11-5 win.  Sydney Gstettenbauer, the nation's second-leading goal-scorer, scored three times, while Elizabeth Hahn added two scores.  The Tritons were edged by Santa Clara 5-4 in the afternoon game.  SCU took a 4-1 lead at halftime, but the Tritons stormed back and cut the deficit to one goal in the third and fourth quarters.  UCSD is now 9-12 on the season.

 

In the first quarter against SSU, Audra Bloom got the scoring started at the 7:33 mark.  Gstettenbauer (6:30) and Nicole Hermann (4:59) would follow with quick strikes and the Tritons were ahead 3-0.  Gstettenbauer and two Hahn goals closed out the first quarter with UCSD holding a 6-0 lead.

 

SSU scored first in the second quarter, but the Tritons scored goals by Emilia Halmay and Bloom as UCSD led 8-2 at halftime.

 

Halmay added UCSD's lone score in the third quarter and Gstettenbauer and Janice Aguilar scored for UCSD in the fourth, closing out the 11-5 win.  Kim Hockett made four saves.

 

Against Santa Clara, Gstettenbauer tied the game at 1-1 in the first quarter with 5:43 to play.  SCU added a goal at the 3:33 mark to take the 2-1 lead through one period.

 

SCU did the only scoring in the second quarter, taking a 4-1 lead at the break.

 

UCSD got started quickly in the third period as Stephanie Bocian connected at the 6:00 mark.  Bocian would add another goal at the 4:36 mark and the Tritons were within 4-3 through three quarters.

 

In the fourth, SCU scored at the 3:20 mark, followed by Hermann's score at the 2:46 mark.  The goal would prove to be the final as the Broncos took the game 5-4.

 

Hockett recorded six saves in the first-quarter and 13 in the game.

 

UCSD is back in action on Friday, March 14 when it hosts Colorado State.  First sprint is set for 6 p.m. at Canyonview Pool.
