LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 15th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team got a strong performance by starting pitcher Matt Rossman and held off a Western Oregon rally to defeat the Wolves 4-3 on Friday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. Rossman retired 18 consecutive batters and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, allowing one run and striking out nine. Evan Domanic and Garrett Imeson each hit two-run homeruns to account for the UCSD offense. Nick Rodieck recorded the final four outs of the game to earn the save.
Domanic went 2-for-3, UCSD's only multi-hit player. Justin Bono and Vance Albitz recorded stolen bases for UCSD.
Western Oregon's Drew Humphrey, Ryan Lewis and Eric Renander recorded RBI.
In the UCSD fourth, Matt Cantele led off with a single. One out later, Domanic homered to rightfield for the first runs of the game at 2-0 UCSD.
In the Triton fifth with two outs, Vance Albitz reached on an error and Imeson homered to leftcenter, giving the Tritons a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Patrick Allen tripled off the rightfield wall, ending a streak of 18 consecutive Wolves retired by Matt Rossman, WOU's first hit. Humphrey hit a sac fly to center for WOU's first run and UCSD led 4-1.
In the top of the eighth, WOU's Lewis walked and stole second. With one out, Lewis stole third and scored on Renander's single. With two outs and the bases loaded, Rodieck got the final out of the frame with the Tritons leading 4-2.
In the WOU ninth, Tyler Moore led off with a double to left. With one out, Lewis doubled to bring WOU within 4-3. The next Wolves batter flew out to rightfield and Lewis advanced to third. The Tritons got the final out on a routine fly ball to rightfield.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday against WOU. First pitch of the first game is set for 11:00 a.m. at Triton Baseball Field. The second game of the doubleheader will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
