LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The 8th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team had seven different scorers but lost to No. 3 UCLA by an 11-8 score on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles. UCSD drops to 18-10 on the season. Daniel Garcia led the Tritons with two goals, while Steven Donohoe, Peter Gresham, Jeff Hunt, A.J. Kotanjian, Sean Robers and Graham Saber scored. David Morton recorded seven saves. UCSD is back in action at the Western Water Polo Association Championships, with the winner receiving at automatic berth to the NCAA Championships at Stanford.
UCLA twice led by as many as three goals in the second quarter. The Bruins opened a 4-1 lead after goals by Hohl and Sbutega in the first four minutes of the second period. UC San Diego's Jeff Hunt trimmed UCLA's margin to 4-2 with 1:42 to play before halftime.
Sbutega added his second goal of the match with 1:21 to play in the second frame, extending UCLA's cushion to 5-2. UC San Diego's Sean Roberts found the back of the cage with 65 seconds remaining in the period, closing the Tritons' deficit to 5-3.
UC San Diego trailed 5-4 with four minutes to go in the third quarter after a penalty shot by junior Peter Gresham. UCLA freshman Matt Preciado and sophomore Clay Jorth added back-to-back goals, pushing the Bruins' margin to 7-4 with 2:39 to go in the third period. Garcia tallied his second goal of the day at the 16-second mark in the third quarter, cutting UCLA's advantage to 7-5.
UCLA used a 3-0 scoring run to assume a 10-5 advantage midway through the fourth quarter.
Junior goalkeeper Chay Lapin recorded 12 saves in the cage for UCLA. UC San Diego's David Morton netted seven stops in goal.
