CLAREMONT, Calif. ? The 9th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team scored 17 first-half goals and cruised to a 24-8 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday afternoon at the Western Water Polo Association Championships. Eight different Tritons scored multiple goals, led by Daniel Garcia with four scores while Knief Lohse, Sean Roberts and A.J. Kotanjian scored three goals apiece. It was the most goals by the Tritons since the 2003 season when UCSD scored 25 times against Pomona Pitzer. The Tritons advance to the WWPA semifinals on Saturday when it faces No. 11 UC Davis.
With the win, UCSD improves to 19-10.
The Tritons scored nine times in the first quarter and led 9-1. UCSD scored eight unanswered in the second quarter and took a commanding 17-1 lead at halftime. The teams scored seven goals apiece in the second-half.
Also scoring for the Tritons was Adnan Jerkovic, Sidd Menon, Steven Donohoe and Graham Saber with two goals apiece. Peter Gresham and Matt Kerchner also scored.
The semifinal between UCSD and UCD will take place at 11:30 a.m. Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara will play in the other semifinal at 1:15 p.m.
