LeVieux, Schofield Set To Compete In NCAA National Championships

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? Jake LeVieux and Bre Schofield will represent the UC San Diego cross country teams as individuals in the 2008 NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday morning in Slippery Rock, Pa. Both runners qualified for the national meet after finishing among the top 15 in the NCAA West Regional November 8 on the UCSD campus.

Hosted by Slippery Rock University, the event will be held at Cooper's Lake Campground with the 10,000-meter men's race beginning at 9:00 a.m. PT and the 6,000-meter women's event schedule to follow at 10:15.

Schofield finished fifth overall in the West Regional two weeks ago, crossing the finish line on her home course with a time of 21:44.2 in the women's 6k. LeVieux had a strong showing for the Tritons as well, placing 14th individually with a time 33:41.1 in the men's 10k run.

Both finished as one of the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams to punch their ticket to this weekend's national championships.

The duo will be competing in Slippery Rock for the second time in 2008 when the gun goes off on Saturday. UCSD's squads took part in the SRU Pre-National Invitational earlier this season, which was also held at Cooper's Lake. LeVieux finished fourth overall (25:24) to guide the Triton men to the team title, while Schofield's seventh place finish (22:41) helped the women place fourth as a team in the October 4 meet.

LeVIeux has had a very successful senior campaign, recording a total of five top 10 finishes during the year. He has been the Tritons' top individual finisher in five of the team's seven competitions this season.

A redshirt freshman, Schofield has been UCSD's leader on the women's side all season long, pacing the Tritons in every race in 2008. The Carlsbad, Calif. native has finished in the top 10 in all seven events and has two individual victories under her belt this season.

The Triton men and women failed to qualify for the D-II National Championships after both teams advanced to the national meet in 2007. The women finished in sixth place in this year's West Regional while the men placed seventh. The West Region will send five women's squads and three men's team to compete for the national title on Saturday.
