UC San Diego

UCSD Falls To Cal State L.A. In NCAA West Regional

Women's Volleyball UCSD

No. 12 UCSD Falls in Five to Chico State

CHICO, Calif.  ? The 12th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Chico State 25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 16-25, 15-11 on Friday night at Acker Gym.  The match was tied 21 times and had nine lead changes.  UCSD's Rebecca Bailey had her best night of the year, putting down 20 kills against one error on .463 hitting.  Sylvia Schmidt added 16 kills on .333 hitting, along with five digs and four aces.  With the loss, UCSD drops to 11-3, 5-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Wildcats improve to 12-6, 5-3 CCAA.  It was the third consecutive match that went five sets for the Tritons.

With 20 kills, Bailey is now at 1,161 kills, just 21 kills shy of the UCSD record of 1,182 held by former Triton Stacy Dunsmore.

Hillary Williamson recorded four aces with 10 digs while Janessa Werhane added 11 digs.  Roxanne Brunsting had a match-high 22 digs and Elaine Chen had 43 assists and seven digs.

Chico State was led by Lindsay Macias with 17 kills.

Chico State erased deficits of 6-0 and 10-1 to rally to win the opening set.  After UC San Diego won the second set with relative ease, the Wildcats returned the favor in the third. However, the Tritons seemed to exert their will on the match in the fourth set, which was the most lopsided of the match.

Macias turned the scales back toward Chico State with a flurry of crushing swings early in the fifth set, however. Down 2-0, she got the Wildcats on the scoreboard with a kill. Following a UC San Diego attacking error, she then pounded out two more kills to give the Wildcats the lead.

Following a sideout, Macias registered another kill. Though UC San Diego fought back to tie the match on four different occasions ? 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, and 8-8 ? but a Crystal Trifeletti kill gave Chico State the lead for good at 9-8.

Cape's kill two plays later, followed by Brick's fifth ace of the match, stretched the advantage to 12-9. Cape tacked on another kill moments later.  A UC San Diego attacking error led to match point, and a Tritons service
error finished the match.

UCSD is back in action tomorrow night when it takes on Cal State Stanislaus.  First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Turlock, Calif.
