LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 16th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team earned a 25-17, 25-13, 25-21 sweep against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons improved to 10-0 all-time against the Otters, and have now won 30-of-31 sets against CSUMB. Rebecca Bailey finished with 14 kills on .387 hitting, while Katie Condon added 12 kills on .409 hitting. “We had a good response from our last match,” said head coach Tom Black. “Our serve and pass was much better... it was night and day compared to yesterday.” With the win, UCSD improves to 17-4, 11-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Otters drop to 7-17, 3-11 CCAA.
Sylvia Schmidt added six kills and Hillary Williamson added five kills. Roxanne Brunsting had 15 digs and Elaine Chen had 34 assists. Chen and Janessa Werhane combined for four of UCSD's seven aces on the night. The Tritons hit at a .254 clip while holding CSUMB to just .051.
In the first set, it was Condon with a near flawless set, sending down seven kills in nine attempts, good for a .667 percentage. With the Tritons trailing 8-5, UCSD scored six straight points on a Werhane service run to take an 11-8 advantage. UCSD never let up, as the Triton lead reached eight points after a Bailey kill put UCSD ahead 20-12. The Tritons would cruise to the win at 25-17.
UCSD held CSUMB to a negative hitting percentage in set two, scoring 12 of the first 17 points, the last two on Werhane aces. Kimberly Carpenter recorded back-to-back kills to push UCSD's lead to 21-11 and the Tritons took the set 25-13.
Set three was the closest of the night with 13 ties and four lead changes. The final tie came at 21-21. A CSUMB service error followed by a Schmidt kill put UCSD up 23-21. Condon recorded a solo block and the final kill to give UCSD the victory.
UCSD is back in action on October 31 when it faces Cal Poly Pomona in Pomona, Calif.
