LONG BEACH, Calif. ? The 10th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team scored five unanswered goals in a 12-10 victory over No. 7 Long Beach State on Thursday night on the LBSU campus. With the score tied 5-5 at halftime, LBSU scored two goals to go up 7-5. The Tritons then put on a rally to score five straight times, with Steven Donohoe scoring two of his four goals during the stretch. The Tritons improve to 11-3, while the 49ers drop to 7-6. Also scoring for the Tritons was Jeff Hunt with three scores, A.J. Kotanjian with two scores and Adnan Jerkovic, Peter Gresham and Sean Roberts with one goal apiece.
“This was a very big win for us... both of our losses to them earlier this year left a bad taste in our mouths,” said head coach Denny Harper. “I think the best thing is that for the first time versus a ranked opponent this year, we got a total team effort. The second team did an excellent job tonight,” said Harper.
UCSD led 3-2 after the first period and the teams would remain close with a 5-5 halftime score. LBSU scored two quick goals to begin the second half, pushing the 49ers lead to 7-5. The Tritons then scored the last three goals of the third quarter and the first two of the fourth to gain a 10-7 edge. UCSD would keep the lead and improve to 11-3 on the year. Two of the losses came against Long Beach State earlier this season.
The Tritons are back in action on Friday night when it hosts No. 8 UC Irvine. First sprint is set for 6:00 p.m. in Canyonview Pool.
