LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 7th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team scored the first 13 goals of the game and cruised past Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a 20-4 score on Friday night at Canyonview Pool. In a brief ceremony before the game, UCSD honored its five senior student-athletes during the Senior Night game. The five seniors, Sidd Menon, Jeff Hunt, Adnan Jerkovic, A.J. Kotanjian and Chance Vermilyea combined to score 11 of UCSD's 20 goals for the night. With the win, UCSD improves to 14-6, while the Stags drop to 2-13.
Nine different Tritons scored goals in the game, leading to the season-high total. “We played good defense throughout the game,” said senior Adnan Jerkovic. “We are playing at a high intensity right now and the team as a whole is playing well,” said Jerkovic.
UCSD jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter as seniors Jerkovic, Kotanjian, Vermilyea and Hunt all scored goals. Peter Gresham also scored in the period.
UCSD shutout CMS in the second quarter as well, as Jerkovic, Gresham, Graham Saber and Hunt scored to give UCSD a 10-0 lead at the break.
UCSD scored the first three goals of the third to take a 13-0 lead before CMS got on the board with 2:40 left on a goal by Jonah Chodosh.
The Tritons scored seven times in the fourth as Saber netted two goals in the period.
UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to UC Santa Barbara on October 24.
