LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? Less than 24 hours after posting a double overtime victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills, the UC San Diego men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 111-102 triple overtime decision at Cal State L.A. on Saturday evening in the Eagles' Nest on the CSULA campus. The loss drops UCSD to 7-4 on the season and 4-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Golden Eagles improve to 9-4 overall and 3-3 in league action.
Six CSULA players scored in double figures while five UCSD scored 10 points or more in a game that saw 15 lead changes and 17 ties. Both teams scored 30 points in the first half but it took three Kelvin Kim free throws with no time left in regulation to force the first overtime period with the score tied at 69 apiece.
Both teams netted 13 points in the first extra stanza and seven in the second OT. CSULA, which had three days off since its last game, was definitely the fresher team and out-scored the Tritons by a 22-13 margin en route to the 9-point margin of victory.
Vincent Camper led all scorers on the night, pouring in 29 points that included a 14-for-17 performance from the charity stripe in the win for the Golden Eagles. Tyler Polo and Demetrius Hazel each netted 18 points while Junior Rodriguez chipped in with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Christofer Hart and Dejon Prejean added 10 points apiece.
Jordan Lawley scored a team-high 20 points while also grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds in the loss for the Tritons. Shane Poppen also grabbed a career-high in rebounds, cleaning the glass 14 times while fellow Kim added 18 points. Henry Patterson and Alan Husted chipped in with 17 and 10 points, respectively. Senior Clint Allard rounded out the UCSD players who scored in double figures, adding 11 points, six boards and four assists.
Both teams were nearly equal in all statistical categories on the night. Remarkably, both teams committed less than turnovers in the 55 minutes of play, 11 from the Tritons and 14 for the Golden Eagles. The lone statistical difference of any notable margin came at the charity stripe where CSULA made 43 of 54 attempts while UCSD made only 25 free throws in 38 attempts.
First year head coach Chris Carlson and his squad will finally return home to RIMAC Arena for their next four games, hosting Cal Poly Pomona next Friday night and Cal State San Bernardino the following evening. UCSD will then host San Francisco State on January 25th and CSU Monterey Bay on January 26th to conclude the four-game homestand. All four contests are slated for 7:30 p.m. tip-offs on the UCSD campus.
