REDLANDS, Calif. ? The 11th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team won both of its games at the Inland Empire Tournament in Redlands on Saturday afternoon. UCSD defeated Cal Lutheran 11-4 and took down La Verne 15-4. Against Cal Lutheran, Chance Vermilyea and Steven Donohoe scored three apiece, while Sidd Menon added two goals. In the win over La Verne, Vermilyea scored four times, while four other Tritons scored multiple goals. Adam Rule tallied 11 total saves in the two games. The Tritons outscored Cal Lutheran 6-1 in the second half, while besting La Verne 7-0 in the final half. UCSD continues at the Inland Empire Tournament on Sunday facing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands.
In the match-up against Cal Lutheran, the score was tied at 2-2 after period one. The Tritons stepped up with consecutive three-goal quarters in each of the next three, while holding Cal Lutheran to just two more scores the reset of the way. UCSD shut-out Cal Lutheran in the fourth period.
Against La Verne, UCSD held a 4-2 lead after one, and an 8-4 lead at the break. The Tritons again stepped up the defense and outscored the Leopards 7-0 in the second-half.
For the day, Vermilyea scored seven goals, while Donohoe added four, Jeff Hunt with three, Curtis Williamson with threee, Daniel Garcia with two and Sidd Menon with two. Sean Roberts, Ian Bausback and Peter Gresham also scored.
