LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 21st-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team recorded 58 kills en route to a 30-24, 30-17, 30-28 win over Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons hit at a .475 clip in game one and finished the match with a .326 - .164 advantage over the Broncos. Elaine Chen ran the offense with 53 assists nine digs and three aces, while five Tritons had at least nine kills. Casey Wilson led the way with 14 kills, while Amber Ries and Sylvia Schmidt added 12 apiece. Natalie Facchini notched 21 digs and added a pair of aces. The Tritons allowed the league's leading blocking team to just 7.5 blocks, one night after CPP tallied 18 against Cal State L.A.
With the win, UCSD improves to 9-5, 3-3 CCAA, while CPP drops to 10-3, 3-2 CCAA.
Not much went wrong for the Tritons in game one, as UCSD hit .475 with 22 kills and just three errors. With the Tritons leading 23-20, a CPP attack error and kill by Schmidt gave the Tritons enough of a lead to win the game. A kill by Ries and a CPP attack error ended game one at 30-24 UCSD.
The Tritons scored six of the first eight points in game two after back-to-back Wilson kills. Leading 7-5, UCSD scored six straight points to open up a 13-5 lead, a scoring run with Wilson serving. The Tritons would cruise to the 30-17 win. CPP could only muster six kills in the game, while the Tritons put down 18.
Game three began like game two, with UCSD scoring seven of the first 10 points of the game. CPP rallied back to tie it at 10-10, the first of seven ties in the third game. The final tie would come at 26-26, but a CPP service error, a CPP attack error and an ace by Chen gave the Tritons match point. After a CPP sideout, the Broncos committed a service error and the Tritons had the win.
UCSD is back in action next Saturday, September 29 when it hosts Humboldt State. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
