BERKELEY, Calif. ? The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team defeated 16th-ranked Pacific 14-9 and lost the ninth-place game to 8th-ranked UC Davis 13-7. In UCSD's win, the Tritons scored 10 of their goals in the middle quarters as Curtis Williamson and Peter Gresham scored three goals apiece. Chance Vermilyea and Sean Roberts added two scores each against the Tigers. In the loss to UC Davis, Daniel Garcia led the way with three goals and Jeff Hunt added two scores. The Tritons are now 7-5 on the season.
The Tritons broke open a tight game against the Tigers with five goals in both the second and third quarters. The scoring outburst put UCSD ahead 13-8 entering the final period as the Tritons came away with the 14-9 win. In addition to Williamson and Gresham scoring three goals apiece, Sean Roberts and Chance Vermilyea scored two each. Ian Bausback, Sidd Menon, Simon Schafer and Steven Donohoe added goals.
Against UC Davis, the Tritons were down 2-1 after the first quarter and trailed 5-2 at halftime. UC Davis scored six times in the third quarter to break open the game. Both teams scored two goals apiece in the fourth. Daniel Garcia scored three goals, while Jeff Hunt added two scores. Ben Miller and Roberts also added scores.
UCSD is back in action on Thursday, September 27 when it hosts Loyola Marymount at 6:00 p.m. in Canyonview Pool.
