LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team trailed by only two at halftime but saw a very athletic Cal State Bakersfield team pull away for a 67-56 victory on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. With the loss the Tritons fall to 10-12 overall and 8-9 in CCAA play while the Roadrunners improve to 13-11 overall and 12-5 in league action.
The ?Runners, who are in their transition year to the NCAA Division I level, increase their all-time series lead over the Tritons to a dominant 15-1 record while also moving their record to a perfect 7-0 inside RIMAC Arena.
UCSD trailed by only two at halftime, 28-26, and took the lead for only a brief moment when Henry Patterson's layup at the 16:41 mark put the Tritons up 34-33. CSUB came back with a Carl Damus layup just 30 seconds later to take a lead that the ?Runners would not relinquish.
Dwuan Rice paced four Cal State Bakersfield players who scored in double figures, leading the way with 13. Damus and Rick Robinson each added 11 while Randall Harding chipped in with 10. Damus also pulled down a team-high six rebounds in the win.
Patterson led the UCSD offense, scoring a game-high 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the floor. He also pulled down a team-high five rebounds in the loss. Freshman Jordan Lawley added nine points and three assists.
UC San Diego committed only 11 turnovers on the night but shot a dismal 11-for-19 from the free throw line while the Roadrunners made 21 of 26 foul shot attempts.
Head coach Bill Carr's squad returns to action on Saturday night, hosting Cal State L.A. at 7:30 p.m. in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons posted a 59-54 victory over the Golden Eagles earlier this season on the CSULA campus.
