LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team scored 22 runs and shut out Regis 22-0 on Friday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field, the first of a four-game weekend series. The 22 runs are the most by a Triton team since 1999, when the Tritons scored 25 against Menlo College. UCSD batted around early and often in innings one, two and four. UCSD had 24 hits, as eight different Tritons had multi-hit games. Matt Cantele hit two homeruns and scored four times. Matt Lawson also scored four times and had three doubles and three RBI. John Roth had a team-high four RBI, while Scott Clement and Tim Mort joined Lawson with three RBI apiece. Kirby St. John earned the win, pitching six shutout innings, improving to 3-0 in his three starts. UCSD is now 5-4, while Regis drops to 4-2.
In the Triton first, David Morehead was hit and Matt Cantele singled, putting runners on second and third with no outs after Cantele advanced to second on the throw to third. Matt Lawson then hit a sac fly to left, driving in Morehead for UCSD's first run. With two outs, Garrett Imeson doubled to deep center, driving in UCSD's second run to give the Tritons a 2-0 lead. John Roth then came through with another two out double, driving in two, pushing UCSD ahead 4-0. Tim Mort continued the inning, giving the Tritons the bat-around in the first, leading 5-0. Mort then stole second and came around to score on Vance Albitz's double off the left field wall, UCSD led 6-0.
Cantele led off the UCSD second with his fourth homerun of the season to rightcenter. After Lawson walked and stole second, Clement drove him in to give UCSD an 8-0 lead. With the bases loaded and still no outs, Roth hit a sac fly to center for an RBI and Mort then singled through the left side for an RBI and UCSD led 10-0 as the Tritons batted around for the second consecutive inning.
Regis loaded the bases with one out in the third. Kirby St. John then struck out the next two Ranger batters to leave the bases juiced and the Tritons remained ahead 10-0.
With one out in the Triton third, Lawson doubled to left, Clement was hit and Imeson walked to load the bases. Franco then doubled down the left field line, driving in two. Roth picked up an RBI on a ground out as UCSD led 13-0 through three.
After St. John retired the side in order in the fourth, Albitz, Morehead and Cantele all reached, loading the bases with no outs. Lawson doubled to left, driving in two, putting UCSD up 15-0. Clement drove in Cantele on a ground ball out for another RBI. Imeson singled to center, driving in Lawson to put UCSD up 17-0. UCSD;s next two batters reached to load the bases. Mort singled to center for an RBI to put UCSD up 19-0.
Cantele led off the fifth with his second homerun of the game, a blast to right. Lawson then doubled, his third of the game, to rightcenter. Clement doubled to center, driving in Lawson, giving UCSD the 21-0 lead.
James Ferguson homered to left center in the eighth, scoring UCSD's 22nd run.
After St. John exited, pitching six innings, giving up no runs and five hits while striking out eight, Daniel Simmons, Joe Raleigh and Mike Chipp pitched a perfect final three frames.
UCSD and Regis play a doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch of the first game slated for 11:00 a.m. Sunday's final game has been changed to an 11:00 a.m. first pitch. All games are played at Triton Baseball Field.
