LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team lost to 2nd-ranked UCLA 14-6 on Saturday night at Canyonview Pool. UCSD scored the first goal of the game, a quick strike by Steven Donohoe but the Bruins proved too much as they took a 4-1 first quarter lead. Peter Gresham led UCSD with two scores, while seniors Ben Miller and Curtis Williamson scored in their final Canyonview appearance. Ian Bausback scored UCSD's other goal, one of three Tritons goals in the final quarter. With the loss, UCSD drops to 10-14, while the Bruins improve to 17-5. UCSD is back in action on Wednesday, November 7 when it takes on UC Irvine at 7:00 p.m. on the Irvine campus.
UCSD's Donohoe opened the scoring with a goal at the 7:12 mark. UCLA came right back and scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
Williamson scored his goal in the second quarter to cut the lead down to 4-2 with 6:02 remaining. After a UCLA goal, Gresham netted his first score to pull UCSD within 5-3 with 5:25 remaining. UCLA went on a 4-0 run to close out the half and lead 9-3 at the break.
UCLA scored the lone goal in the third quarter, a goal by Marco Santos.
UCLA scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to lead 12-3. Bausback, Miller and Gresham scored for UCSD in the final quarter.
It was the last home game for Triton seniors Williamson, Miller and Simon Schafer.
