MALIBU, Calif. ? The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team lost to No. 6 Pepperdine 22-8 on Saturday afternoon in Malibu. UCSD played a strong second quarter, scoring four times and trailed 12-5 at halftime. The Waves scored six times in the third period to put the game out of reach for the Tritons. Chance Vermilyea and Michael Libutti scored two goals apiece to pace the Tritons. Clayton Snyder recorded a game-high five goals for Pepperdine. The Tritons drop to 10-16 on the season. UCSD is back in action at the Western Water Polo Association Championships on November 16-18. The Tritons will defend their WWPA title on the Air Force campus in Colorado Springs.
Pepperdine came out strong, outscoring UCSD 8-1 in the first period. The Tritons were able to get their offense going in the second quarter with goals by Libutti and Donohoe, scoring a total of four times in the quarter.
In the second half, Pepperdine came out fast again, scoring six goals in the frame. The Waves outscored UCSD 4-2 in the final period.
