LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 12th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team dropped a 12-10 decision to 7th-ranked Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. The Tritons were paced by Steven Donohoe's four goals, while fellow sophomore Daniel Garcia added two scores. Curtis Williamson, Sean Roberts and Ben Miller also added goals for UCSD. LBSU was led by Pavle Filipovic with four goals, while Jeff Green wood and Nick Korsgaden added two apiece. With the loss, the Tritons drop to 9-8, while the 49ers improve to 9-4.UCSD is back in action next weekend at the Southern California Tournament. The Tritons begin the tournament by facing the host institution, UC Irvine at 12:00 p.m.
The Tritons began the game with a goal on their first possession on a score by Garcia. LBSU scored the next three goals by Greenwood, Reid Tomassi and Justin Koeppen. UCSD scored at the 1:50 mark in the first quarter, a goal by Schafer to pull UCSD within 3-2 after one period.
The Tritons were the first to score in the second quarter as Donohoe poured in a strike to tie the game at 3-3. LBSU came back with three unanswered scores by Sean Greiner, Jake Kinne and Filipovic to lead 6-3 with 3:12 remaining in the half. UCSD's Garcia ended the LBSU scoring run with a goal at the 2:32 mark. LBSU closed the half with back-to-back scores at the 2:01 mark by Filipovic and the :12 mark by Greenwood to lead 8-4 at half.
UCSD opened the scoring in the third on Roberts' goal to pull within 8-5. The Tritons could pull no closer than three goals in the period, as LBSU took an 11-7 lead into the fourth.
Miller scored UCSD's first goal of the fourth to pull within 11-8. The teams would exchange goals before UCSD's Donohoe scored at the 4:23 mark and Williamson netted a goal to close out the scoring with 1:27 left in the game as LBSU won 12-10.
