No. 20 Suffers Five Game Defeat to Cal Poly Pomona on Friday Night

 

POMONA, Calif. ? The 20th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team suffered a 30-28, 30-32, 30-21, 18-30, 15-13 loss on Friday night to Cal Poly Pomona.  CPP continued its home winning streak to 10 straight matches, remaining undefeated in Darlene May Gym in 2007.  The Tritons led by four points in game five and led 13-10 before the Broncos scored the final five points of the game to take the match.  Rebecca Bailey paced the Tritons with 21 kills while Sylvia Schmidt added 14 kills.  With the loss, UCSD drops to 15-7, 9-5 CCAA, while the Broncos improve to 17-5, 9-4 CCAA.

 

Elaine Chen recorded 38 assists and eight digs for UCSD, while Kim Adams also saw action at setter with 19 assists and five digs.  Schmidt recorded five of UCSD's 14 aces on the night.  Casey Wilson recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs.  Natalie Facchini led the Tritons with 21 digs and chipped in two aces.

 

CPP was led by Allie Newman with 13 kills, while Antoinette Kathol recorded 12 kills.

 

The Tritons recorded 17 kills to CPP's 12 kills in game one and the Tritons led 25-22.  from that point, CPP rallied to tie the game at 25-25 and completed a 6-0 run to lead 28-26.  CPP would take the game 30-28 after a UCSD error.

 

The second game featured eight ties as the Tritons looked to be in control, leading 25-21 after a Schmidt kill.  CPP raced back to tie the game at 26-26 before the Tritons scored three straight to force game point leading 29-26 after a Chen ace.  CPP stormed back with four straight points to take the lead at 30-29.  A kill by Bailey tied the game and back-to-back kills by Wilson and Amber Ries closed the game 32-30 UCSD.

 

UCSD hit -.050 in game three as CPP took control and led by as many as 11 points and cruised to the 30-21 win.

 

The Tritons owned game four, hitting .375 and cruised to the 30-18 win.  UCSD led 20-12 and never looked back.

 

In the fifth game, UCSD led 8-4 after a Schmidt ace and CPP error.  UCSD continued to lead at 12-9 after kills by Ries and Schmidt.  A Schmidt kill put UCSD on top 13-10 before CPP began its run of five consecutive points to close out the match.

 

UCSD is back in action tomorrow night when it takes on CSUSB.  First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be seen live by CSTV Broadband.
