IRVINE, Calif. ? The 13th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team split its first two games on Saturday at the Southern California Tournament in Irvine. The Tritons opened with a 10-5 loss to 7th-ranked UC Irvine. UCSD led at half, but a strong Anteater fourth quarter gave the tournament hosts the win. The Tritons defeated 16th-ranked Princeton 10-9, as Daniel Garcia scored the go-ahead goal with :58 seconds remaining. The goal was Garcia's fourth of the game, a game in which the Tritons trailed 6-2 at halftime. The Tritons will play two more games on Sunday, the first at 12:00 p.m. against No. 12 Saint Francis.
In the loss to the Anteaters, UCSD led 1-0 after the first quarter and 3-2 at halftime. The Tritons were outscored 8-2 in the second-half, including 5-1 in the fourth quarter. Garcia scored three times while Curtis Williamson and Steven Donohoe added goals for UCSD. Mark Stemler recorded nine saves in the loss.
Daniel Garcia scored his fourth goal of the game with 58 seconds remaining to give 13th-ranked UC San Diego the 10-9 win over No. 16 Princeton. UCSD trailed 6-2 at halftime but scored five straight goals in the third quarter, two by Garcia. An extra-man goal by Matt Hudnall gave Princeton a 9-8 lead with 4:28 left but Garcia tied the game with 2:43 remaining and then hit the game-winner in the final minute.
Garcia scored four times, while Donohoe scored twice. Williamson, Ian Bausback, Ben Miller and Chance Vermilyea added scores for the Tritons.
UCSD is back in action with two more games at the Southern California Tournament on Sunday in Irvine. The Tritons first game will be at 12:00 p.m. against No. 12 St. Francis.
