LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team snapped its four game losing streak with a 59-54 victory over Cal State L.A. on Friday night in the Eagles' Nets on the CSULA campus. With the win the Tritons improve to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in CCAA play while dropping the Golden Eagles to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in league action.
Shane Poppen led the Tritons in scoring on the night, scoring 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor while fellow sophomore Kelvin Kim added 11 points and two assists. Darryl Lawlor added seven points and a game-highs in both rebounds (8) and assists (5).
Jontae Vinson scored a game-high 22 points for the Golden Eagles in the loss. He also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while Vincent Camper rounded out the CSULA scorers in double figures, scoring 12 to go along with a team-high four assists.
As a team the Tritons shot 42.1% from the floor, but made 7 of 14 from long range. The Golden Eagles connected on 43.8% of their field goal attempts but made only 2 of 10 from behind the 3-point arc.
There were nine lead changes and 13 ties on the evening with neither team leading by more than six points at any time during the contest. UCSD held an 18-8 advantage in points off the bench, most of which came from Poppen who did not make the start for the first time in 2006-07.
UCSD returns to action on Saturday night, playing at Cal State Bakersfield at 7:30 p.m. The Tritons have defeated the Roadrunners only one time in the previous 14 meetings between the two squads. The lone win for head coach Bill Carr's squad came in Rabobank Arena two seasons ago.
