LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team won its fifth straight and swept Humboldt State 30-21, 30-18, 30-23 on Saturday night in RIMAC Arena. Rebecca Bailey led the way with a big night, recording 16 kills and hitting at a .433 clip. Brianna Koche added 11 kills, five digs and three blocks. Natalie Facchini had 15 digs. The Tritons outhit the Lumberjacks .246-.065. HSU was led by Olivia Solomon with six kills.
The Tritons scored 10 of the first 13 points and never led HSU closer than 15-10. The Tritons opened up an 11 point lead at 24-13 and cruised to the 30-21 win on a Sylvia Schmidt kill.
In game two, the Tritons scored 12 of the first 15 points, the last on a Koche kill, puting UCSD up 12-3. Bailey would send the Lumberjacks into a timeout after a kill, with UCSD leading 20-10. Natalie Facchini served up an ace and Koche followed with a kill to go ahead 22-10. UCSD would take the game 30-18.
Game three started like the others, with the Tritons jumping out on top with the 8-2 lead. This time the Lumberjacks came back, pulling within 10-8 and 11-9 after a UCSD service error. UCSD then scored three straight on an HSU error and two aces by Courtney to lead 14-9. After an HSU kill, UCSD ran off four more points, aided by kills from Courtney and Bailey to put the Tritons on top 18-10. HSU would get no closer than five points at 26-21. The Tritons' Casey Wilson, Koche and two Bailey kills put the game and match away at 30-23 UCSD.
Kristin Halvorsen had 32 assists, three digs and three blocks, while Kim Adams had 14 assists. UCSD served up 12 aces to HSU's three. Courtney had five of the aces, while Halvorsen added three.
UCSD is back in action on Friday, October 6 when it hosts Cal State Bakersfield. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
