LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team swept Sonoma State 30-25, 30-22, 30-23 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. Nicole Courtney (14 kills, 10 digs) and Brianna Koche (10 kills, 12 digs) recorded double-doubles to lead UCSD. Rebecca Bailey also played well with 13 kills and a .444 hitting percentage. With the win, UCSD improves to 12-2, 7-2 CCAA while the Seawolves drop to 6-7, 3-6 CCAA. SSU was led by Michelle Fletcher with 11 kills.
Game one was close throughout as SSU took a 19-18 lead. UCSD opened up the first three point lead of the game at 24-21 consecutive kills by Courtney and Bailey. SSU would pull within two points twice, the last at 26-24. UCSD then scored the next three points on a SSU setting error, an Amber Ries and Koche block assist and another Ries kill to lead 29-24. UCSD would take the game 30-25.
UCSD did not take the lead in game two until Koche recorded a kill to lead 10-9. After SSU jumped back in front 11-10, UCSD would go on a small run to lead 20-15 on back-to-back Courtney kills. SSU would close with in three points several times before the Tritons pulled away to win 30-22.
In game three with the Tritons leading 5-3, UCSD went on a 13-4 run, forcing SSU into a time out and the lead at 18-9. The Tritons were never really threatened the rest of the game, en route to a 30-23 win. Hannah Gary put the match away for the Tritons with the final kill.
Ries added seven kills while Sylvia Schmidt sent down six kills for UCSD. Natalie Facchini had a match-high 21 digs for the Tritons.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday, September 30 against Humboldt State at 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
