LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 5th-ranked UC San Diego men's water polo team defeated WWPA rival and 6th-ranked Loyola Marymount 8-7 in front of 1,589 fans at Canyonview Pool on the La Jolla campus. The Tritons used fourth period goals by Adnan Jerkovic and Steven Donohoe to take an 8-5 lead and hold on in the final 2:30 for the win. UCSD improves to 12-2, while the Lions drop to 6-5. Jerkovic scored three times for UCSD, while Donohoe and Casellini added two apiece. Ty Lackey also scored for the Tritons. LMU was led by Shaun Flood with three scores.
LMU scored first on Flood's first goal with 6:27 to play. On the next possession, UCSD's Jerkovic netted a score as the teams remained that way through the first at 1-1.
In the second, Casellini scored twice, the second giving the Tritons the 3-2 lead, heading into halftime.
In the third, the teams would exchange goals untill Lackey scored with 1:38 left to give UCSD a two-goal lead. The teams would remain that way until the start of the fourth period with the Tritons ahead 6-4.
In the fourth, Jerkovic scored to put UCSD ahead 7-4 with 5:08 left. LMU's flood scored at 3:15 to cut the deficit to 7-5. Donohoe then netted his second goal to put UCSD in front 8-5 with 2:30 remaining. The Lions would never let up, scoring at the 1:58 mark and the 1:09 mark to pull within 8-7. LMU had one possession to tie the game up, but the Tritons defense locked down and came up with the stop.
UCSD is back in action on Friday, September 29 at 4:00 p.m. at UC Santa Barbara.
