LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 13th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team swept Cal State Dominguez Hills 30-18, 30-17, 30-24 on Wednesday night in RIMAC Arena. Amber Ries and Nicole Courtney led the way for the Tritons with 10 kills apiece, while Courtney also added 10 digs. Brianna Koche had six kills and five blocks, while Casey Wilson served up four aces. The Tritons outhit CSUDH .277- -.049. With the win, UCSD improves to 10-2, 5-2 CCAA while the Toros drop to 4-9, 1-6 CCAA.
In game one, UCSD outhit the Toros .333- -.156. Leading 11-7, UCSD scored 10 of the next 15 points to open up a 21-13 advantage. UCSD's last three points came on CSUDH errors.
UCSD umped out to a 10-1 lead in game two as Courtney and Natalie Facchini had long service runs. The lead would go down to 10-6, before UCSD put together a 5-0 run to extend the lead to 15-6. CSUDH would get no closer than seven points for the rest of the game. Two late aces by Facchini put the Tritons on top 26-24 and the Tritons cruised to the 30-17 win.
Game three began like game two as the Tritons led 11-3 after back-to-back Rebecca Bailey kills. UCSD would lead by as many as 10 points at 26-16, before CSUDH went on a small run to cut the lead to 28-23. Hannah Gary put the game and match away for the Tritons, slamming down an overpass, 30-24. Gary finished the night with four kills in five attempts and no errors.
Facchini led the Tritons with 13 digs. Sylvia Schmidt also added three kills for UCSD. CSUDH was led by TaMesha Jefferson, Nicole Hoffman and Penina Suddeth with four kills apiece.
UCSD is back in action tomorrow on Friday, September 22 when it travels to face Cal State Monterey Bay. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. in Seaside.
