BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The 19th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team swept improved to 7-0, 2-0 CCAA after sweeping its seventh consecutive opponent with a 30-23, 30-21, 30-27 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday night in Bakersfield. UCSD was paced by Nicole Courtney with a match-high 16 kills and added seven digs. Rebecca Bailey added 11 kills with four digs and hit at a .409 clip. Natalie Facchini had her second consecutive 20 dig night for UCSD. The Tritons are back in action for their CCAA home opener against Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, September 8. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
In game one, Bailey (six kills) and Courtney (five kills) combined for 11 kills and hit at a blistering .667 clip as the Tritons won 30-23.
UCSD fell behind 19-16 to CSUB and called timeout in game two. From that point, UCSD went on to score 14 of the next 16 points, including 10 straight, to put the game away 30-21. In the streak of 10 straight points, Courtney had two kills and three consecutive aces. Amber Ries had two kills and a block assist in the streak as well.
In game three, UCSD took a quick 10-6 lead that was short lived as CSUB would later score six straight points to lead 15-13. The teams would battle back-and-forth, with the last tie at 24-24. UCSD's next three points would come on CSUB attack errors as the Tritons led 27-25. After a UCSD attack error cut the lead to one, Courtney came through with a kill to lead 28-26. CSUB answered with a kill but that would be the Roadrunners last point as the Tritons set up Hannah Gary and Courtney with kills to end the game and match at 30-27.
