No. 19 UCSD Defeats Bryant and Seattle

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 19th-ranked UC San Diego women's volleyball team improved to 4-0 after sweeps over Bryant 30-15, 30-22, 30-24 and Seattle 30-24, 30-13, 30-18 on Friday in RIMAC Arena at the Triton Invitational hosted by Courtyard Marriott.  UCSD outblocked Bryant 14-1 and hit .333 for the match.  Amber Ries had 15 kills on .522 hitting while Rebecca Bailey added 11 kills.  In the win over Seattle, Bailey and Nicole Courtney had 10 kills apiece.  Brianna Koche added seven kills, 11 digs and nine blocks. 

 

UCSD, Cal State L.A. and Cal State San Bernardino are 4-0 in the Invitational.  Seattle, CPP, WWU and CSUDH are 2-2 while Bryant, WOU and Mesa State are 0-4.  The Triton Invitational concludes on Saturday with each team playing one match.

 

In the win over Bryant, the Tritons dominated from the beginning, scoring 17 of the first 20 points to lead 17-3.  UCSD hit .500 in the game and held Bryant to -.160.  Ries and Koche hit back-to-back kills to close the game 30-15.

 

Bryant stayed close in game two before UCSD opened up a 21-15 lead on a block assist by Koche and Kristin Halvorsen.  Bryant would get no closer than four points the rest of the way as UCSD won 30-22.

 

Bryant cut an early UCSD lead down to 20-17 before the Tritons extended the lead to 28-22 ona Bailey kill.  Bailey then tallied the final point on another kill, her 11th of the match as the Tritons won 30-24.

 

UCSD fell behind early to Seattle at 4-1, but regrouped quickly to take a 10-7 lead on a Bailey kill.  With the score tied at 16-16, UCSD scored seven of the next nine points, forcing Seattle to take timeout.  Seattle could get no closer than four points as the Tritons won game one 30-24.

 

Game two was all UCSD as the Tritons took a 20-4 lead and never let Seattle into the game, winning 30-13.

 

With the score tied at 9-9 in game three, UCSD scored 14 of the next 17 points to take command.  Bailey ended the match with her third ace of the match at 30-18.
