Softball Drops Two to Warriors

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Cal State Stanislaus on Friday afternoon at the Triton Softball Field on the UCSD campus. CSUS captured game one by a 9-1 score before taking game two by a 7-3 margin.

 

With the wins the Warriors improve to 29-16 overall and 12-8 in CCAA play while the Tritons fall to 20-22 overall and 8-12 in league action.

 

UCSD jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first game on a RBI double in the first inning off the bat of Elizabeth Vazquez, scoring Jenny Spencer who reached on a single to lead off the frame.

 

The Warriors answered back with two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead on a two-run homerun by Meghan Franksen. The blast was Franksen's eighth of the year and plated Alyssa Guzman who was hit by a pitch one batter prior to Franksen's at-bat.

 

CSUS added one run in the fourth and one more in the fifth before putting the game out of reach with five runs in the top half of the seventh inning.

 

Jessica Gaumnitz picked up the win for the Warriors and improved to 10-4 on the season while Melissa Ward fell to 13-9 on the year for the Tritons after allowing eight runs, seven of which were earned, on 10 hits with three walks and three punchouts in 6.1 innings of work.

 

In game two, CSUS took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Franksen that pushed Suzanne Burrola across the plate. The Warriors would add four more in the fourth for a 5-0 lead before allowing a UCSD run in the bottom half of the fourth inning as Jenny Maze picked up an RBI single.

 

Cal State Stanislaus would add two more runs in the sixth inning before giving up a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to the Tritons for the eventual 7-3 victory. Amanda Cantu picked up the win after throwing 3.2 innings of solid relief in which she allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four. She improves to 13-4 on the season.

 

Lauren Chastain takes the loss for UCSD in game two, giving up five runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. Nicole Fullerton threw the final 3.2 innings in relief, giving up two runs on four hits while walking none and striking out three. 

 

Senior Jenny Spencer collected two of UCSD's six hits in the second game, scoring once and driving in one. Sara Robinson picked up an RBI on a groundout in the seventh inning in her only at-bat.

 

Head coach Patti Gerckens and her squad returns to action on Sunday, hosting 10th-ranked Cal State Bakersfield in a doubleheader slated to begin at 12 p.m.
