LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's volleyball team came up short in losing to Pacific 30-28, 25-30, 22-30, 27-30 on Saturday night in RIMAC Arena. Chris Sayers, one of four Tritons playing in their last collegiate match, led UCSD with 20 kills. Seniors Mike Reuter (11 kills and nine digs), Jon Daze (eight kills) and Brenden Bowe (seven digs) all saw significant action on Senior Night. UCSD took game one 30-28 on a Daze kill. After losing games two and three, UCSD led 18-12 in game four, but could not hold on. UCSD's season ends at 2-27, 1-21 MPSF while the Tigers finish at 8-20, 6-16 MPSF.
In game one, UCSD hit .421 with 19 kills against three error in 38 attempts. The Tritons trailed 13-14 but would put together a small run with the score tied at 15-15. Kills by Stephen Shaw, Sayers and Daze, combined with a Pacific error gave UCSD a 19-15 lead. Pacific cut it down to 19-18 before UCSD pulled ahead 24-20 on a Brooks Dierdorff kill. UCSD would lose the lead at 24-25 on an attack error. UCSD's John Mark Wendler recorded back-to-back kills, followed by a Pacific error and a Sayers kill and UCSD was back ahead 28-25. This time UCSD held onto the lead and closed out game one 30-28 on a Daze kill.
The Tritons and Tigers were tied mid-way through game three before the Tigers put a small run together. UCSD came within 20-21, but Pacific han an answer and upped the lead to 25-22. UCSD would get no closer than 26-24 as Pekka Seppanen put away game two with a kill at 30-25 Pacific.
The Tritons fell behind early in game three at 16-9 and never recovered. UCSD ended up hitting .000 in the game as Pacific won 30-22.
UCSD led 17-11 in game four after a Russ Hardy and Garret Smith block assist. Pacific came back and tied it at 20-20 on a block assist. UCSD led 26-24 before Pacific rallied three straight points for its first lead of the game at 27-26. With the score tied at 27-27, the Tigers' Brian Adamson put down a kill and a UCSD attack error set up match point for Pacific. The Tigers then ended the match with a block assist at 30-27 Pacific.
