UCSD Heads to Northern California for Two This Week

Tritons Swept by Hawks

LA JOLLA, Calif -The men's volleyball team lost to Quincy 28-30, 22-30, 25-30 in non-conference action on Wednesday night in RIMAC Arena.  The loss drops the Tritons to 1-17 while the Hawks improve to 8-13.  UCSD was led by Chris Sayers who put down 15 kills.  Jon Daze added 12 kills and John Mark Wendler added 10 kills with a .471 hitting clip.  QU was led by Ryan Ehnert with 15 kills against one error.  UCSD hit .314 for the match, but was outdone by QU who hit .390.  Brooks Dierdorff had a match-high 49 assists and Eric Leserman had a match-high nine digs.

 

With game one knotted at 7-7, UCSD scored four straight on two Sayers' kills sandwiched between two Daze kills to lead 11-7.  With the score tied later at 23-23, QU scored three straight to open up a 26-23 lead.  The Tritons came back within 27-28 and 28-29, but QU's Ehnert put the game away 30-28 Hawks.

 

In game two, back-to-back kills by Sayers gave UCSD a 12-10 lead.  Tied at 14-14, QU scored five straight points with two kills, an ace and two UCSD errors to lead 19-14.  From there, UCSD could not pull closer than four points and lost the game 30-22, the final point by QU's Branden Been.

 

Game three was tied at nine, 10, 11 and 15 before QU went on a small run to lead 19-16.  UCSD fought back to pull within one point on two occasions, the last at 20-21.  QU scored five of the next six points to open a 26-21 lead which the Tritons would cut down to two points at 24-26 on a QU attack error.  QU answered with two consecutive points and the Tritons ran out of time as the Hawks put game three away 30-25 on a Joe Caruso kill.

 

UCSD is back in action on Friday, March 10 when it travels to USC to take on the Trojans in Los Angeles, Calif.  First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
