UCSD Swept at Cal State Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. ? The UC San Diego softball team lost both of its games at Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons dropped game one by a narrow 1-0 margin before suffering an 8-3 defeat in game two.

With the losses the Tritons fall to 11-8 overall and 4-2 in CCAA play while the Warriors improve to 14-8 overall and 3-3 in league action.

Game one was the very definition of a pitcher's duel as only one run on nine hits were accumulated by the two teams combined. CSUS got the only run of the contest in the second inning on a Mehgan Franksen home run off UCSD pitcher Melissa Ward.

Elizabeth Vazquez, Desiree Franciscus and Niki Anderson accounted for the three UCSD hits. Ward fell to 8-3 on the season in the loss.

The Tritons came out swining in game two, scoring twice in the first inning. UCSD would then give one back in the bottom of the first before CSUS tied the score at two apiece in the bottom of the second. The Warriors would go on to score three in the fifth and three more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Jenny Spencer went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the loss for the Tritons while Vazquez had two hits and Franciscus one to account for the other three UCSD hits.

Nicole Fullerton took the loss and fell to 4-3 on the year after allowing five runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work. Danna Garcia picked up the win for the Warriors and improved to 1-2 on the year after allowing only two runs on three hits in 5.1 innings in the circle.

UCSD returns to action with four CCAA games next week, the first two of which will be played at Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday afternoon. The Tritons will then return home for a doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay at home on Saturday, March 11. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
