Tritons Conclude Season with 67-40 Loss to CCAA Champs

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team's 2005-06 season came to an end on Saturday with a 67-40 loss to Sonoma State in RIMAC Arena. With the win the Seawolves claim their first CCAA Championship, ending the regular season with an 18-8 record and a 16-4 mark in league play.

UCSD's best year the Division II level comes to an end with a 15-14 overall record and a 12-8 mark in conference action.

After taking a 2-0 lead on a Shane Poppen layup just 35 seconds into the contest, the Tritons surrendered a 22-4 run to Sonoma State over the next eight mintues and was never able to recover. The Seawovles led  by 26 at halftime and pushed that lead to as many as 30 with just under 15 minutes to go.

Both teams cleared their benches at that point and SSU cruised to the CCAA title with the 27-point victory.

J.T. Tipton led the Seawolves with 15 points and seven rebounds. He made 6-fo-8 shots from the floor while also going a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. Vince Inglima and Kevin Christensen added nine points apiece in the win.

Nine of the 14 players, that head coach Bill Carr used in the game, scored for UCSD. Andrew Hatch had a team-high six points and five rebounds. Redshirt freshman Mike Bakal scored two points in his first collegiate action while senior Odioh Odiye had four points in his final collegiate game.

The 15 wins for UCSD is four more than their previous high at the Division II level, which was set by last year's squad. The 12-8 mark in the CCAA is the first winning conference campaign for the Tritons in men's basketball history.
