NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's volleyball team was swept by No. 6 Cal State Northridge 28-30, 21-30, 18-30 on Saturday night in Northridge. The loss drops the Tritons to 1-16, 0-13 MPSF while the Matadors improve to 10-7, 6-6 MPSF. For UC San Diego, Jon Daze had a team-high eight kills (.043) while Mike Reuter (.200) and Chris Sayers (-.105) each added six kills apiece. John Mark Wendler equaled CSUN's Waite with a match-high six blocks and added a pair of kills, while Brooks Dierdorff recorded 27 assists and a team-high four digs. The Tritons hit .046 (29-25-87) as a team, but held their own at the net as UCSD was out-blocked by a slim
12.5-12.0 margin.
Northridge rarely trailed in the match, although the Tritons held a pair of leads in game one. Northridge jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the first game, but surrendered the lead at 12-11 after a Dierdorff setter dump. The Matadors took the lead back at 14-13 after UCSD's Garret Smith hit out. But the Tritons would not go away as they reclaimed the lead at 19-18 after Reuter and Smith teamed up to block Vance. UCSD opened up its biggest lead at 22-20 before the Matadors got kills from Isaac Kneubuhl and Dan Rhodes, followed by a Rhodes ace giving Northridge a 23-22 lead. The Matadors built the lead to three (27-24) before the Tritons battled back to tie the score at 28-28. But a MattBellante kill and a Bellante-Rhodes block on Reuter ended game one.With a slight 8-7 lead in game two, Northridge scored nine of the next 12 points to open up a 17-10 cushion and cruise home with a 30-21 win. Game three was similar as the Matadors jumped out to a 10-4 lead and would not trail the rest of the way, posting a 30-18 win.
UCSD is back in action against Quincy on March 8 at 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
