LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team assured itself of the first winning season since moving to the Division II level with a 50-38 victory over San Francisco on Friday night State in RIMAC Arena. The win pushes the Tritons record to 15-13 overall and 12-7 in CCAA play with one regular season game remaining. SFSU falls to 1-24 overall and 1-18 in league action.
Both teams struggled from the floor on the night, making only 28 combined shots on 96 attempts. UCSD made 34.1% of its shots, going 15-for-44 on the night while the Gators made only 13-of-52 attempts for a .250 shooting percentage.
The Tritons never trailed on the night, taking a 3-0 lead on a Robby Peters jumper, just 43 seconds into the contest. That shot was the only one that Peters made in the contest, but UCSD managed to hold a 9-point advantage at the break.
Head coach Bill Carr's squad extended that margin to as many as 16 points with 12:32 to go before SFSU mounted a comeback. The Gators narrowed the lead down to three at 41-38 with 2:25 to go on a Lawrence Metz 3-pointer. From there, UCSD would go on a 9-0 run to close out the game.
Shane Poppen led the way for the Tritons, scoring a career-high 16 points in the win. Fellow freshman Darryl Lawlor added 10 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Andrew Hatch chipped in with eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
Will Logan scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the way for the Gators in the loss. Kajahl Benes added six points and a game-high eight boards.
UCSD returns to action on Saturday night, concluding the regular season with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against Sonoma State. The Tritons will honor senior Odioh Odiye in a brief Senior Day ceremony prior to the start of the contest.
