UCSD Wins Two More on Final Day of Best of the West Classic

TURLOCK, Calif. - The UC San Diego softball team won its final two games at the Best of the West Softball Classic hosted by Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday. The Tritons defeated Seattle University by a 7-3 score in game one and handed the host a 9-6 loss in the final game of the tournament.

UCSD finishes the tournament with a 5-1 record and was tied for Best of the West Classic title but ended up third after the tiebreakers were factored in.

In game one on Sunday the Tritons belted out 13 hits in the victory. Desiree Franciscus led the way with three hits while Jenny Spencer, Brittni Carino, Elizabeth Vasquez, Jenny Maze and Dallas Hernandez all had two hits and one RBI.

Melissa Ward threw her third straight complete game and improve to 3-0 on the season, allowing three runs on 10 hits while striking out two.

In the nightcap, UCSD handed Cal State Stanislaus its first loss of the season, using a four-run fifth inning in the victory.

Vasquez added two more hits and two RBI in the win while Nikki Palmer added a hit and two RBI. Nicole Fullerton threw 3 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the win while Melissa Ward tossed the final 1 1/3 innings, striking out two to preserve the victory.

UCSD returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Point Loma Nazarene in a doubleheader that begins at 4 p.m. at Triton Softball Field.
