CARSON, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team won for the third time this season in overtime, downing Cal State Dominguez Hills on its home court by an 80-77 score on Saturday night in the Torodome on the CSUDH campus. With the victory the Tritons improve to 14-13 on the year and 11-7 in CCAA play while dropping the Toros to 9-16 overall and 6-12 in league action.
UCSD is now 3-1 in overtime games this season, having posted victories over Grand Canyon and Cal Poly Pomona in addition to tonight's victory. The 11 league wins also guarantees the Tritons a winning record in CCAA play, its first since joining the conference prior to the 2000-01 season.
Sophomore Clint Allard led four UCSD players who scored in double figures with his team-high 21 points. Robby Peters added 14 on 4-for-8 shooting from the 3-point line while Henry Patterson added 13. Shane Poppen scored 10 points to round out the Triton players in double digits.
UCSD made only 24 field goals on the night but went 27-of-37 from the charity stripe and 5-of-11 from long range. Cal State Dominguez Hills went to the free throw line only 16 times, making 11 of those attempts while shooting 8-for-15 from behind the 3-point arc in the loss.
Carlos Rivers scored a game-high 31 points in the loss for the Toros, going 11-for-13 from the floor, including 5-for-6 from deep. Durwin Williams added 16 points and seven rebounds for CSUDH.
Head coach Bill Carr and his team returns to action next weekend for the final two games of the regular season. The Tritons will host San Francisco State on Friday night and Sonoma State on Saturday evening. Both contests are slated for 7:30 p.m. tip-offs.
