LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's volleyball team lost to No. 2 UC Irvine 20-30, 27-30, 22-30 on Saturday night in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons were led by Jon Daze with 10 kills while Chris Sayers added nine kills. Mike Reuter and John Mark Wendler had seven kills apiece. The loss drops UCSD to 1-14, 0-11 MPSF while the Anteaters improve to 14-3, 9-2 MPSF. UCI was paced by Jayson Jablonsky with 14 kills and a .500 hitting clip. UCSD is back in action on Friday, March 3 when it travels to take on UC Santa Barbara at 7:05 p.m. in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The Tritons fell behind early in game one 3-10, but battled back to cut the UCI lead down to 14-12 on a Daze kill. UCI put together a mini run to lead 23-15 and would take game one 30-20.
Game two was tied eight times, and UCSD led 14-12 after a Sayers kill. The Tritons fell behind 22-18, but this time battled back to tie it at 25-25 on a UCI attack error. UCI then scored the next two points before a Garret Smith kill pulled UCSD within 26-27. UCI then scored three of the next four points to close out game two 30-27.
UCI took a 14-10 lead in game three, but UCSD came back to within 16-17 after a Wendler and Reuter block assist. UCI then showed why it is ranked at No. 2 with a 13-6 run to end the match at 30-22.
