LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team won its fourth straight game on Friday night, beating Cal State Monterey Bay by a 70-67 score in RIMAC Arena. With the win the Tritons improve to 13-12 overall and 10-6 in CCAA action while the Otters fall to 9-16 overall and 6-9 in league action.
The winning streak is the Tritons' longest at the Division II level, all of which have come in CCAA play. The 10 league wins also sets a new program record, eclipsing the 9-13 mark set by the 2003-04 team.
Freshman Henry Patterson led the way once again, scoring 24 points. Sophomore transfer Jason Bull added a career-high 17 points while Odioh Odiye and Clint Allard each pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
Jay Demaestri led the CSUMB offense, scoring 13 points and pulling down six boards. Devoughn Lamont and D'Shon Cannon each added 10 in the loss. Cannon also dished out a game-high seven assists.
The Tritons led nearly the entire game until an Aeshrraff Dabbas layup with 2:29 remaining in the game put the Otters up by one. Darryl Lawlor answered right back, nailing a 3-pointer to put UCSD up by two with 2:19 to go.
After a Lamont layup tied the score at 67 apiece, Patterson answered with a layup of his own with just over a minute to play. Odiye then added a free throw with 10 seconds to go to ice the game. CSUMB's two shots before the buzzer did not even draw iron.
UCSD returns to action next weekend, playing at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night at and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday evening. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m. starts. CSUMB plays at Cal State San Bernardino tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m.
