Tritons Snap Warriors' 4-Game Win Streak with 81-77 Victory on the Road

TURLOCK, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team completed a weekend sweep on the road, snapping Cal State Stanislaus' 4-game win streak in the process with an 81-77 win on Saturday evening in Warrior Arena.

The win moves UCSD's record to 11-12 overall and 8-6 in CCAA play. The 11 victories equals the program's most since moving to the Division II level prior to the 2000-01 season. The previous high came last year, in Bill Carr's first season, when the team finished 11-16 for the year.

UCSD trailed 30-20 with 7:35 to go in the first half on Saturday night before going on a 15-4 run over the final minutes to take a 35-34 lead at intermission.

Neither team led by more than four points in the second half until the Tritons held a 77-72 lead with only 40 seconds to go in the contest. The Warriors could get no closer than two points as UCSD held on for the 4-point victory.

As a team the Tritons made 28-of-51 shots from the floor, including 5-for-11 from behind the 3-point arc. UCSD also sank 20-of-27 charity shots while pulling down 36 rebounds, dishing out 16 assists and committing only 10 turnovers.

Conversely, Cal State Stanislaus made only 26-of-55 shots from the field and a mere 5-for-21 from long range. The Warriors grabbed five less rebounds and dished out four less assists while committing the same amount of turnovers.

Henry Patterson led the Triton offense with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor. He also grabbed six boards and made 6-of-8 free throws. Fellow freshman Shane Poppen poured in 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds off the bench. Sophomore transfer Jason Bull added a career-high 13 points.

Joel Stallworth scored a game-high 27 points for the Warriors on 10-for-13 shooting. John Schrader and Kavin Young each added 11 points apiece in the loss.

UCSD returns to action next week, hosting two CCAA contests in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons play Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday night and Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday evening. Both contests are slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
