LONG BEACH, Calif -The UC San Diego men's volleyball team dropped a 25-30 21-30 27-30 match against 4th-ranked Long Beach State on Friday night. The loss drops UCSD to 1-9, 0-7 MPSF while LBSU improves to 11-2, 6-1 MPSF. Chris Sayers paced UCSD with 10 kills while Mike Reuter added nine kills and a .412 hitting clip. John Mark Wendler and Jon Daze added six kills apiece. The Tritons hit .294, but the 49ers came in with .330. The Tritons outblocked LBSU 5.0-4.5.
After LBSU took the first two games, game three was much more of a challenge between the two clubs. While LBSU led most of the way, the Tritons rallied back each time. With LBSU leading 15-11, UCSD would string a mini run together and comeback to tie it at 19-19. A Wendler ace then put UCSD ahead 20-19, forcing LBSU into a timeout. The teams would remain close with each other and tie again for the last time at 27-27. The 49ers then scored the last three points of the game and match.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday against No. 1 ranked NAIA Cal Baptist at 7:00 p.m. in Riverside.
