ORANGE, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's basketball team suffered a tough 70-64 loss in overtime to Chapman University on Tuesday evening at the Sutton Sports Center in Orange, Calif. With the win the Panthers improve to 15-7 on the year while the Tritons fall to 8-11.
The loss was the first one that came in overtime for head coach Bill Carr during his brief two year tenure on the La Jolla campus. The Tritons were a perfect 3-0 in overtime contests prior to tonight's loss, including a 2-0 mark this season.
After falling behind by a 34-21 margin at halftime, UCSD scored 37 second half points to force overtime. In the extra period Chapman held the Tritons scoreless for the first three minutes en route to a 12-6 advantage and the 6-point margin of victory.
Greg Perrine led the Panthers with a game-high 22 points while Patrick Carney added 16. Josh Flynn-Brown chipped in with 15 to round out the Chapman players who scored in double figures.
Freshman Shane Poppen scored a team-high 15 points off the bench for the Tritons, making 4-of-10 shots from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. He also pulled down a team-high four rebounds while sophomore Clint Allard added 10 points in the loss.
UCSD returns to action on Friday evening, hosting Cal State L.A. in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons will also host Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday night. Both games are slated for 7:30 p.m. tip-offs.
